To prevent injuries to a greatest possible extent, one must know somewhat about the epidemiology. In the sport of kickboxing injuries occur to different parts of the body. It is not uncommon the athlete that throws the punch or the kick gets injured, rather than the one who is kicked or punched. That gives us reason to believe that both: technique and protective equipment is important.

The way of training

To prevent injuries in general, it is important to find a balance between hard training and recovery.

Too much training without enough variation leads to injuries, especially those of a more chronic nature. To maintain a good physical foundation is important for the body to handle more intense workout and competitions. This could be achieved by training a certain amount of strength, stretching and exercises that challenge coordination and balance. And do not forget to strengthen the muscles of the “central core of the body”.

Recovery after injuries

The time to recover from an injury varies, depending of the type and severity of the injury.

When an acute injury occurs you should try to stop the bleeding and swelling by protecting, elevating and resting the injured body part. At this time, ice can be useful. The rehabilitation phase follows and aims to get you back to normal training. Type of injury, pain and swelling are factors that guide you towards the correct intensity and amount of training in this period. At last, before you return to another competition, you should exercise dedicated and hard to return to reach the same performance level and to withstand the same amount and load of activity.
